Imagine the rap game without Lil’ Wayne. No more Wayne to hog every song with a verse, no more mixtapes, no “greatest
rapper alive”. That could happen if Lil’ Wayne is sentenced to jail for his 2007 felony gun possession charge.

According to TMZ, cops searched Wayne’s tour bus after they detected the aroma of marijuana following his show at the Beacon Theatre in 2007.

Police approached the bus and Wayne allegedly tossed a Louis Vuitton bag with a gun inside. Wayne was charged in 2007 with felony gun possession. It’s expected that Wayne will serve a sentence of eight months to a year, as the New York judicial system is usually tough on firearm violators.

But what is more interesting is the fact that Lil’ Wayne will be out of the rap game for a year. Knowng Wayne, he’ll probably use every waking second making new material; but how excited am I to hear what he puts out?! Not only will the rap game be relieved of Wayne for about a year, but in my imagination world, Wayne would really invest his prison sentence in one epic project. Instead of five mixtapes, just make one epic full-length album. If he has 365 days, imagine how much time he could put into writing, editing, planning and practicing.

Adolf Hitler was imprisoned for what he considered to be “political crimes” after his failed revolution in Munich in November 1923. He devoted his imprisonment to writing his autobiography, Mein Kampf. Mein Kampf combined elements of an autobiography with an exposition of Hitler’s political ideology. Just a year after writing his book in prison, his book was published and became one of the most sold and popular books of the Nazi era and has become a historic text to this day. Now Lil’ Wayne shouldn’t make a “Nazi Bible” but, Mein Kampf was an example of a major imprisonment project. I’m sure Wayne’s brain will overflow with ideas and result in non-stop song-making, even without his blunts and cold medicine Hawaiian Punches. Wayne has the work and business ethic of Donald Trump. He is non-stop; notorious for staying up late in the studio recording new mixtapes. But how will he do in a confined environment like a jail cell?

Most of my days start off with the big question, what will I listen to as I walk to class? I scroll through my iPod seeing some Mos Def, pause for a second, but move on to the top of my iPod where I choose The Black Keys. But choose no more, you can listen to both artists at once.

Blackroc is a rap rock collaboration album by Ohio-based blues rock band The Black Keys and several hip hop artists. The project has been overseen by Damon Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records. Blakroc’s debut and self-titled album has features from insane rap artists such as Raekwon, RZA, Jim Jones, NOE, Mos Def, and many more. After Damon Dash began listening to The Black Keys, who he says became his favorite band, he reached out to the musicians to meet in person. Dash suggested that they enter the studio with Jim Jones, with whom Dash has recently partnered to form Splash Records. The first single for the album, “Hoochie Coo”, features a singing duet between The Black Keys’ guitarist Dan Auerbach and Mos Def, with rap verses from Jim Jones; it was released on September 14th, 2009. And the rest is history…

Blakroc is the new white boy’s rap. But don’t let that confuse you. The album blends rap and rock together tremendously. “What You Do to Me” featuring Billy Danze, Jim Jones and Nicole Wray, has blends of Supremes’ vocals, Wu-Tang verses, and the Doors’ jamming that all mix to make ’60s rock meets ’90s rap. Each verse on “Blakroc” spits dirty, and the intense choruses are full with trademark Dan Auerbach blues-rock riffs.

Blakroc’s new album brought back real rap, sending autotune, midi controllers and turntables out of the window for a real music revival. It’s so awsome to see artists come together and make music for the sake of making good music.

The musicianship from all artists involved really surprised even Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. Auerbach said, “He [Raekwon] was sorta what I imagined watching Bob Dylan work in his prime would be like. Raekwon came in, heard the music, got inspired and just sat down and started writing. He wrote like 20 verses, just like that, in 45 minutes. And everything that he says is so visual, such a story. His rhyme schemes are just insane.” So, check out Blakroc’s debut self-titled album out in stores now.

One Band You Should Know: Blind Pilot

Portland, Oregon’s own Blind Pilot is a best kept secret full of potential. The indie folk band is currently on their fall tour with special guest Laura Veirs & The Hall of Flames and are most likely taking a stop near you. Blind Pilot has opened for many nationally acclaimed acts such as The Decemberists, the Counting Crows and Gomez. They are touring with their only album, 3 Rounds and a Sound which was released in July of 2008. The great harmonizing of singers Israel Nebeker, Luke Ydstie and Kati Claborn mix well with the banjos, acoustic guitars, xylophones, and trumpets compiled on the debut album. While still remaining an up-incoming band, Blind Pilot has received attention from CNN, NPR, and several other media networks due to their exceptional debut album but also for their first two tours, which they traveled by bike. With their standup bass guitars and drum kits strapped to the back of their bikes, the band traveled from Vancouver to San Francisco. “The whole point of the project at first was to tour our music by bicycle and trailer from Canada down the west coast to Mexico,” Israel Nebeker explained in an interview with NPR. “We only made it to San Francisco cause our bikes got ripped off there.” With their eco-friendly tours, an album full of catchy and chill tracks, Blind Pilot is one band you should know.
