So my sister and I got into the discussion of men’s fashion the other day. Both of us work in the retail industry and are constantly bombarded with the latest fashions for women and men. Luckily for me, I read GQ as much as I read any women’s magazine so I get a double dose of what’s hot for men these days. However, between all the new and old trends I’ve compiled some of my favorite (and not-so favorite) looks for the opposite sex, and here they are.

1. Love: Half Zip Pullover.
(J. Crew, preppy yet trendy. Uh, beautiful!)
For years now I have deemed this probably one of the most attractive looks a man can wear. Not only does it have the clean-cut preppy style but paired with the right pair of perfectly tailored dark denim you can easily look like a GQ model. Please consider that the pullover has to be the right size, a little fitted please, and layered over a complementing (or contrasting if you dare) button-up and I can guarantee girls will be throwing their digits at you.

2.Love it not: Jerseys.

So you like sports? I would have never guessed! So thank you so much for wearing your most-admired athlete’s uniform out to the bar/dinner/movie theatre. Not. There is a time and place for this time of garb, and it’s called a sporting event. Unless you are at the Staples Center seeing Kobe sink 3’s, I don’t want to see his jersey, it’s not cute and it looks like you don’t have enough sense to pair something stylish together.

3. Love: The skinny tie.

(I legit can’t even comment on this. Jake. You are a God.)
I don’t care what your bromantic partners say, the skinny tie is sexy. Yes, sexy. It shows you know what’s up in the fashion world and you aren’t afraid to try it. It’s also so simple: take the button up and slacks you were going to wear and throw this on, granted you need some good dress shoes, and a matching belt perhaps, but really this trend is not so scary. It will catch any girl’s eye because not only do you have the guts to try it out but you probably look a little like David Beckham, yes please.

4. Love it Not: Graphic Tees.
(I’m sad to report that on the website where this t-shirt is sold, this very shirt was sold-out. Its a disgrace, really.)
If you are wearing a graphic tee as we speak it might as well read: DOUCHE. Because that is what you look like. I sincerely loathe the graphic tee, it might have been endearing in high school but if you are a freshman in college and beyond PLEASE throw them away and start sticking with basic colors. Graphic Tee shirts that say you’re a beer pong champion or has your favorite 80’s movie title splashed across the front is unattractive and makes any girl think you have not one ounce of fashion in your repertoire- which you may not, but let’s just pretend you do, so stick with the basics!

5. Love: Plaid. Plaid. Plaid.

While this trend may feel a little hipster for you, the look is going main stream for fall. Try a light cotton version with slim sleeves for the perfect fall look. Pair with a dark khaki pant or dark jean and take the look from day to night, and you won’t look like a grunge but instead a GQ God.

6. Love it not: No sock/ exposed ankle/ shortened hem pant (well kinda…)

So yes, the no sock, exposed ankle peeking out from a shortened pant leg when sitting down is trendy, a little euro and a lot sexy, however, when you misjudge the length of your pants and your standing and I can see pretty much half your calf, it’s not cute, and I find myself questioning, ‘where is the flood?’ So just make sure if you’re going to attempt this look assess your pant length and make sure they are appropriate or risk looking like Urkel.

I have to give props to one group of guy friends I see pretty frequently. These boys can dress. They clearly look like they care about what they are putting on their bodies and it makes a difference. They aren’t afraid to try a new trend or wear something a little tighter, a little skinnier leg, and little dressier than sneakers. And girls notice. I’m not saying throw away your wardrobe, I’m also a sucker for basketball shorts and a t-shirt, or maybe I’m just a sucker for boys in general, but taking that extra second to look in the mirror or read that 10-must-have list in GQ (there’s one online, check it out) goes a long way.

We grew up listening to the musical geniuses of the 1960s and 1970s thanks to yard sale vinyl and local classic rock stations. But what is generation alpha going to be remembering about now?

I took the liberty of looking back and making some interesting comparisons/predictions:

Santana : Rodigo y Gabriela

Gabriela can move her fingers. Fast. Hell, she’s basically a one-woman band between her bass-beat wrist bumps and fancy guitar riffs. And the best part of it all is that she plays some contagious stuff. Stuff that makes you dance even if you’ve had the worst day of your life. Stuff that makes you shake your hips like they don’t lie. She’s got Santana’s magic. Time will tell if she’ll collaborate with Rob Thomas.

Queen : Fang Island

Queen is that staple band that brings together random strangers. Everyone knows the lyrics to Bohemian Rhapsody, but you still can’t help high-fiving the guy next you to in the bar as you both collectively wail “Mamaaaa OOOO OH OH OOO.” Luckily Fang Island has ample material to fuel your irish-pub-appropriate sing-a-longs with their signature “OOooo” breakdowns. Oh, did we mention they can shred on the guitar too?

Fleetwood Mac: Beach House

Victoria Legrand is often compared to Stevie Nicks. Credit it to the dark, yet inviting vocals, or maybe the long, messy, blown-out locks. Or even the fact that they head their uber-successful bands. In fact, they’re so similar that my sub-conscience rendered them onto the same stage to perform a Fleetwood Mac cover; Unfortunately, it never happened. I asked my friend Brett for confirmation that the cosmic occurrence went down, but he had no idea what I was talking about. So yes, I dreamt it, and yeah, I know I’m weird.

Eric Clapton : John Mayer

Nothing can truly match the stunning grace and pure energy of a heavy guitar breakdown. Add some technical flare and a unique guitar-solo-propelled “Oh” face and you’ve got your hands on a Guitar God. Both Clapton and Mayer share amazing guitar skills that, when paired with their widely-loved songs, make them rise above the average signed artist. They also have really recognizable, and lovely, singing voices. I’m officially starting the “Clapton/Mayer Tour 2011″ petition.

The Clash : Deerhunter

The Clash made a name for themselves as being revolutionaries not only in their song content, but with music styles–providing a big push for the British punk rock movement. Deerhunter has done the same for our generation, forcing the evolution of indie rock. Deerhunter, and even it’s band-members’ side-projects Atlas Sound and Lotus Plaza, gave a face to noiserock, ambient and shoegaze–introducing music lovers to sounds and arrangements beyond traditional genre boundaries.

James Brown : Dan Deacon

James Brown knew how to get DOWN. And who would have thought the late Great had passed the party “torch” to Dan Deacon. The proof is in the pudding; Deacon gets it on with the help of some hardcore synth and a crowd just waiting to go ape-shit. Only difference is that I’m pretty sure James Brown didn’t arrange self-choreographed, audience-synchronized group dance at his shows. If you don’t understand what that means, go to a Deacon show.

How do my comparisons hold up in your opinion? Do you have a better analogy? Did I overlook a blatant similarity? Hit us up on the comments.

Now they’re making more history by starting their own record label.

The label will be appropriately named 9:30 Records and will have a launch party at club Sept. 16, with a performance by its first signed artist Justin Jones. Jones was previous managed by 9:30 Club’s co-founder Seth Hurwitz.

Listen to some of Jones’ county-alt music on his myspace.

But 9:30 enthusiasts will have to get tickets to the party by lottery, offered to only newsletter subscribers and social media followers.

About 2 months ago in the gorgeous area of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY I was lucky enough/honored/STOKED to be a part of my first ever music video for LITERALLY my favorite band of all time—Ted Leo and the Pharmacists (Rx)! The video was shot over the course of about 3-4 days in various locations including one of Brooklyn’s hottest indie rock clubs, The Bell House. With about a weeks notice, a limited amount of fans (mostly fans that check his facebook/twitter/website OBSESSIVELY like I do that were even able to SEE this update) got the chance to sign up to be an extra and be a part of this extraordinary venture!

This video is for the song “Bottled In Cork” off of their newest LP, “The Brutalist Bricks” and features two prominent funny guys, John Hodgman (the “PC” from all of the Apple commercials, The Daily Show, etc.) and Paul F. Tompkins (Comedy Central Presents, Best Week Ever, etc.) and it was SO much fun getting to work with them and just be in their presence!

The band announced last night via their official website, www.tedleo.com, that they would be premiering something BIG and, after 2 months of searing anticipation, I logged on at 8:30 am this morning to discover this treasure ready for the world’s viewing pleasure! In further investigation of this breaking news, I also discovered that Ted himself even hints to an impending career change in the direction of musical theatre! (I wonder if it was filming this video that did it?

To hear more of their songs AND some great new alt indie rock, listen to audiOMG! this Friday from 7-10pm RIGHT HERE on audiocandyradio.com!

Watch the video above and enjoy (oh! and watch for ME looking all “punk rock” and dancing my ass off at 4:26!!!)

We all spend a majority of our time online. Facebook, blogging, dare I say Myspace (no offense if you’re still logged into that but its a little 2005 for me), not to mention e-mail and aim, it’s no surprise that shopping has gone virtual as well. I personally use online shopping as the lazy-window-shopping, I can check out what’s hot, what’s selling, and what’s on-sale from the comfort of my bedroom. So, in no particular order the following websites I deem the hottest on the web:

1. Modcloth.com

This online shopping destination offers vintage looks at a reasonable price. Dresses, tops, shoes and accessories are available in trendy to more classic looks. One of the cooler features of the website is their “Be The Buyer” program in which the shopper, being you, can go through pages of clothes voting for the items you want to be featured on the website to be purchased! A recent item I have found that has really floored me was their faux-fur vest (don’t worry PETA lovers) from Jack by BB Dakota, only for $64.99! I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I’ve daydreamed about wearing this vest with a long-sleeve black tee, skinny jeans and my over-the-knee black leather boots. Check this site out ASAP, every time I log-in a see something new, its truly a great fashion resource, affordable and unique, what’s not to love?
(I literally MUST own this, love, love, love, LOVE)

2. Forever 21.com

An oldie, but a goody. Forever21.com allows you to shop their hectic stores in an organized and relaxing manner. One of the best features of this site (besides not having to navigate the stores full of 13 year old overzealous girls) is their yellow tag deals, which offers items of clothing on sale for a limited time (not that F21 prices can get much better- denim for $15.80!?) The website also features clothing not easily found in stores, including their active wear, a larger array of accessories and maternity clothing. Not to mention, you can shop Forever 21′s other branches like, Heritage 1981, Twelve by Twelve (their version of couture), Faith 21 (plus sizes) and their Menswear. Overall, the biggest advantage of shopping F21 online is avoiding the messes and crowding of the in-store experience…. unless you’re visiting the new flagship in New York City… I will put up with teeny-boppers there, no problem.

3. SouthMoonUnder.com
I may be biased because I truly am in love with this store, but only recently has the store opened up near my home and I can finally access the greatness that is South Moon Under. So the great thing about the website, it allows you to check out all the hot merchandise without searching out a store nearest you (which, I realized until recently, may not be that close at all). SMU features great designers like Free People, BCBG, BB Dakota (I’m really loving them this blog), Hanky Panky and super cute swimsuits, beach gear, jewelry and accessories. While the store is only the expensive side, online offers a great Sale section to check out all the goods for a wallet-friendly price.

4. Nordstrom.com

Nordstrom is one of the best department stores around offering reasonably priced super-cute items, shoes and accessories. While the in-store experience is always full of customer-service and clean easy to navigate floor plans, online offers the organization of in-store with the out-of-stock in-store items at your fingertips and items only offered online. Not to mention you can organize the sale items in increments of 50, 60 and 70% off, depending on how much you are willing to spend. And Nordies being customer-friendly offers you to shop online and pick up in-store, the instant gratification of in-store shopping with the convenience of shopping from your couch.

5. Shopbop.com

This website is orgasmic.I literally cannot express my love for this site enough. Some of the most beautiful (and expensive) clothing on the runways are offered to you online. Brands like Joie, J Brand, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Only Hearts, Rachel Roy, Rag and Bone… stop me now, we could be here all night. Even if you can’t afford the items on the site, the window shopping aspect alone make this website worth visiting. There are the usual sale sections and designer books, there is also a look-book section where you can see how to wear the vast variety of clothing. I literally want you to navigate away from this blog and to this site if your passionate about fashion because this website is truly art.
( A look-book to help navigate the denim section of the website- ps if you want to buy me this outfit please e-mail me at chelsealde….. jk. but not really)

In-store shopping can get overwhelming so the next time you’re flipping channels on the TV while facebook stalking and you’re too lazy to get to the mall, check out some of these site, I’m guaranteeing you will spend some money before leaving your couch!

True Panther Sounds has been on top of their game, having a knack of hearing good talent and signing them to their label before the world has any idea what has hit their ears.

So, it’s not surprising that True Panther is the first to dish out bubu music beyond Sierra Leone’s borders. Their vessel is the “bubu king” himself Janka Nabay, and his debut four-track EP–appropriately titled Bubu King– dropped this past March. He’s since come out with a new single “Ah Mufan” and has been playing shows in New York City. See him tonight at Zebulon.

Bubu has been a part of the Sierra Leone culture for hundreds years, and in a country striving for development but trying to keep tradition, Nabay’s electronic-infused bubu has the best of those worlds.

This drop isn’t the first time Nabay has had exposure in the States. He had a mention in Fader last year, which can be read here. But True Panther still is the first label to add Nabay to its list of homegrown heavy-hitters.

Check out the official video here for his single “Eh Congo:”

Note: I picked up on “John Kennedy” and “America” in the lyrics, but I obviously didn’t understand what he was saying. Someone commented on the youTube asking the same question, and this was the response: “he’s talking about the second hand clothing imported from America and worn by the poor in many African countries (Sierra Leone in this case) and the staple Bulgur given as aid and eaten by the poor. We’ve become so accustomed to wearing these clothes they have come to suit us and become a fashion of their own. We survive on bulgur. from America. Who started the program to send us these things…?…John Kennedy. That’s paraphrasing but is the general gist of the song.”

I’ve always had a thing for Jenny Lewis and an unparalleled hatred for Zooey Deschanel. So when Zooey tied the knot with indie royalty Ben Gibbard, I thought Jenny didn’t have a chance of claiming the title of the indie “It” couple with her boyfriend Johnathan Rice.

But she’s giving me some serious hope that she might taking the prize in the end.

Her project Jenny and Johnny with her man is gaining momentum. Their album I’m Having Fun Now is a delightful showcase of folky harmony and lovely chemistry. They’re going on tour, to boot.

So, looks like after a tour and hit record, Jenny and Johnny might reign as the best indie couple to ever walk the earth. Take that Zooey.

Listen to three tracks from the upcoming release, which drops Aug. 31, on this cute mixtape player:

Cheers Elephant – Space and Time

Do you have anywhere to be tonight? Because we could be here awhile… If you’re looking for an intense lyrical and harmonic conversation about what’s more than you or I, Cheers Elephant is the band to listen to. Rooted in and out of Philadelphia with a history that dates back to a middle school punk band, Cheers Elephant is Derek Krzywicki, Roberto Kingston, Jordan del Rosario, and Travelin’ Mat. I had the opportunity to casually share a brew with front man Derek to learn more about who they are and where they’re going.

Having been around since 2007, Cheers Elephant has by this time developed a solid footing the in Philly’s music scene, which Derek notes has a healthy community feel built on mutual respect for fellow Philly bands. However, Philly fans have to question how easy it is for bands to break out of this city. “In my mind, the same number of bands are coming out of Philly as any other city,” explains Derek, “but the view is warped. People’s perception is that there aren’t many bands in Philly.” Locals do feel that these home grown bands should be expanding more because we, as Philadelphians, know and love them and so should the rest of the world! Obviously. This is the typical Philadelphian attitude: holding our ideals superior and blindly misinterpreting why the rest of the world doesn’t get it.

Well, let’s just say that the rest of the world doesn’t get it just yet, as the band does not receive nearly as much brotherly love in other places compared to Philly. Let’s face it; fans feel the same way about the lack of openness in other cities. If you’ve ever been to a show in NYC and the crowd surrounding you stands pretentiously cross-armed as if they don’t know how to feel a beat, then you know what I’m talking about. However, universal acceptance is a result of “sheer odds and mathematics,” notes Derek. The more you put yourself out there, the more likely people will know your name. Today Cheers Elephant is trying to build an upbeat reputation in other cities and expand their network of connections and fans alike with a coastal tour.

The eclectic feel of the first album makes it difficult for Cheers Elephant and fans to classify their sound. Depending on which song you listen to, they could fall into different genres: bluegrass folk, psychedelic rock, alternative country. The sound is often reminiscent of epics like The Beatles, Beach Boys, and The Kinks not only because of similar song structures but also for the utilization of 3 part harmonies.
The underlining commonality between songs is the lyrics, which are greatly inspired by science, philosophy, and the world around us. The theme of the first album, which never hints to love found or lost, is all about “inner peace and experiencing your own personal grace amongst the universe.” A sentiment of a hippie? Perhaps, but Derek has never relied on imagination-enhancing drugs to answer life’s big questions. In fact, he reveals that the song “Continuation” is about not finding solace in drugs for your own happiness or self-acceptance. “You don’t need drugs to celebrate life,” Derek proclaims.

So where do the trippy songs on the first album come from? “You never know where music comes from when it comes to you appropriately,” says Derek. “It doesn’t involve thought. It just comes out of the sky. Somehow it’s like all our brains are radio transmitters.” The song “Space and Time” for example, a classic crowd favorite, came to fruition randomly during a practice session. “Beats just starting coming out, vocals started coming out of mouths, and the next thing you know we all looked around, and King pointed to all of us and said ‘SONG! NEW SONG!’

Despite the band’s easy-going personalities, relaxed views on life, and the fact that dates are illusive and irrelevant, the foursome has been in the studio recording a “proper” album for “two years too long,” says Derek. Perhaps the most critical band member, Derek feels that the first self-titled album, which was really a collection of demos, lacked continuity because it was recorded in multiple locations. His perfectionist attitude, mostly toward his own work vocally, leaves him a bit restless about the details of the album, feeling like they coulda-woulda-shoulda done things differently. As the artist, you look back on you’re work and easily hear all your imperfections that are inaudible to the listener’s ears. Derek explains, “John Lennon and Paul McCartney, for example, were never able to hear their own greatness as an outsider.” This is the bitter-sweet curse that plagues many musicians.

Even fans have commented that after seeing Cheers Elephant play in person, the first album does not suitably represent them. They are proudly known for their lively and eccentric shows that appeal to all senses, but recognize the difficultly translating this energy into a recording. Frankly, that is not necessarily what the band is trying to accomplish. Derek clarifies that in the right state of mind at a show, you can let go of your emotions, but there is something truly intimate that’s captured in the studio that can’t be portrayed in a club. Nonetheless, Derek boldly states, “I am striving to be the best front man in Philadelphia.” What’s he or the rest of the band doing differently than other dudes out there? “What did David Byrne of the Talking Heads do differently than anyone else?” he questions back. The true answer is that it’s Cheers Elephant’s contagious inner spirit and inkling for big things that set them apart and make them a must-go-see-for-yourself.

Derek may have answered life’s big questions for himself, but the band is still exploring new realms and defining who they are musically. Cheers Elephant is progressing the first album’s eclectic feel and embracing a style that’s uniquely their own. The world can expect the new album to be much more melodic, less rhythm driven, and to be released in late September, of course keeping in mind that dates are illusive.

Think of a seventeen-year-old girl that plays guitar. She probably sings about first loves or yearning for that classroom crush, but in a considerably less marketable way than textbook Taylor Swift. She’s probably milkingher cuteness for all its worth for the chance to play a few local coffee shops to get discovered.

She fits the mold.

But it’s not a good thing. It’s boring. It’s been done before. We get it.

So when I stumbled upon the myspace of a set of teenage twins from St. Louis, Mo., I clicked into their first track expecting to hear the run-of-the-mill sappy pop song. I wanted to at least be impressed by their vocals, or something that would put elevate them out of the pool of average high-school songstresses.

But it was so much more than that.

Not only did these girls have a fun, garage-pop sound, but their vocals have such a great style and playfulness. I hit next in the media player expecting to have just heard their token good song, but next track kept my attention as well as the first. If anything, I found that I continued to like the next song more than the song before through out their whole track-listing.

The duo goes by the name Dubb Nubb and they released their EP New Bones May 22. Take a listen for yourself at their myspace here.

I instantly fell in love with this pair. Their music alone rules. But I just dig their whole vibe: their seemingly punk edge, their carefree mood, their realness. They are refreshing on so many levels.

So definitely check them out. While you’re at it, watch their ultra-cute self-cut music video for “Spesh Pass,” which is conveniently my favorite of their songs:

There is always a flood of strong opinions when you mention John Mayer.

“He’s overrated.”
“He’s an incredible guitarist.”
“He’s an asshole.”
“He plays such mediocre mainstream music.”
“He almost made me cry when he played that song.”

He generates so much commentary that pulls from so many facets of his life– his music, his exposure, his technique, his love life but the catch is that it doesn’t faze him. If anything, he entertains the haters by making outrageous comments and actions to turn the joke on them.

Half the time, the cuts against John come from people that only know j. may(er) from the radio. They haven’t heard his jazzy blues-guitar riffs in the John Mayer Trio or his ridiculous guitar breakdowns in concert on his popular pop singles. Homeboy can lay down some sick guitar. Trust me.

And I don’t blame people for judging John for what they hear on their local easy-listening radio stations. He does have a crucial mainstream following that has elevated him to super stardom. But I don’t want people to short-change him for the amazing musician that he is.

Pointblank: you’ve got to see him live.

You can buy his albums, which are really good even though they are for the easy listener (what’s so wrong with that), but you’ve got to see him live if you want to say you’ve given him a true chance.

He’s currently on tour. Check the below list for a date near you:
