Tony Cottrell, known by his artist name Hi-Tek, is a full-spectrum producer. He can create a banger, a commercial hit, or a sleek and sparse underground track. Starting with the Rawkus crew in the late 90s, Hi-Tek has put Cincinnati, along with the whole state of Ohio, on the map. He is legendary both for his vision and hard work. He collaborates with everybody. Starting with Mos Def & Talib Kweli, he has moved outward to producing for successful acts as varied as G-Unit, Styles P, and The Game. This may be due to his musical upbringing, seeing as how his dad Willie Cottrell had his own soul band. With Reflection Eternal planning on dropping Revolutions Per Minute in about a month, Hi-Tek is about to get big props once again. Rightly deserved. So until next week, bump some Hi-Tek. It comes recommended.

We had a little bit of a struggle getting all the microphones working correctly, but consider it a test run. This will be closer to the format of the show during the summer when I have some of these reoccurring guests on more frequently.

The show featured some of Sam Hoffmeister’s antics, not to mention some live and or never before heard performances by both bands in attendance, The Cage and Groove Sandwich.

Please excuse the echo in the microphones in the two minutes of the broadcast, we were having some technical issues:

With the ever emerging prominence of the singer-songwriter, it seems that critics are constantly searching for someone they can call “the next Bob Dylan.” Certainly there are some incredible song writers out there now, many of whom have had the now cliché expectation cast upon their music; Jeff Tweedy, Ryan Adams, Connor Oberst, James Mercer, Joe Pug, the Tallest Man on Earth, Sam Beam and Jim James all come to mind, and I’m certain that I’m forgetting a few others. But where critics most often fail in their eagerness to adorn some new or established talent with the “new Dylan” moniker is in their assumption that an acoustic guitar, a harmonica, and self involved or politically motivated lyrics are tantamount to the achievements of Bob Dylan. What they don’t seem to understand is that Dylan was not Dylan for aesthetic reasons, he was Dylan because of who he was as a person and because he was open to being that person, no matter the repercussions in the world he was living in, no matter what the social climate or musical conventions of the time might have called for otherwise. It is for this reason that we remember Bob Dylan, not as the young man once deemed the next Woody Guthrie, but simply as Bob Dylan. This is his greatest achievement as an artist.

If any songwriter today is deserving of the comparison it is most certainly Jeff Tweedy. His music always seems an extension of his personality, beyond the expectations of his audience, and beyond the expectations he may even hold for himself. His lyrics are open enough to represent any number of ideas; from happy go lucky drinking songs, to sad love songs that are deeply personal, he renders his experience in a way that allows us to re-imagine our own. This is the hardest test of a song writer and few have passed it so well and so consistently.

As far as influences go, I know that Jeff Tweedy is influenced by Bob Dylan, by Neil Young, by Nick Drake, John Prine and John Lennon, amongst others, but I don’t think about or hear these influences when I hear his music the way I do when I listen to other singer-songwriters, many of whom have written songs that equal Jeff’s genius but far less frequently. I will now submit that, like those critics I don’t like, I believe Jeff Tweedy is our generation’s Bob Dylan. Not because he can turn off the mic and belt out a folk song on a beat up Martin twelve string, not because he sounds like Bob Dylan, not because he is political, or poetic, or sings in a nasally voice. Jeff Tweedy is our generation’s Bob Dylan because he can’t help but be Jeff Tweedy.

Tonight’s show is from a benefit show that Tweedy has done several times throughout the years called “Letters to Santa.” The show was recorded live in a living room. It is insanely intimate and wonderful. Unfortunantly, I can not make this available for download as I have noticed that it has been requested taken down from other sites. But, if you search for Jeff Tweedy “Letters to Santa” you should be able to find it.

Florida natives Look Mexico have just released their Suburban Records debut To Bed To Battle. The record is a melodic ten song journey, which proves to be an easy and enjoyable listen. Chances are, most of you probably have never even heard of Look Mexico, but do not fret.

To Bed To Battle is the band’s second full-length, and also comes after the release of several EPs. To Bed To Battle was recorded last summer in the band’s home state of Florida, in the basement of a pizza shop. The band’s first single and opening track off of the record “You stay. I go. No following” is an intense introduction to the album, and offers a glimpse of whats to come on the remainder of the album. The accompanying music video (which is excellent as well) can be viewed here.

To avoid confusion, it should be cleared up that To Bed To Battle is a straight-up, rock and roll record. However, there are songs on the album that take an acoustic, and more folksy route, which could potentially even be categorized into the “ballads” (gasp!) category. Such songs are “Take It Upstairs, Einstein,” and the standout track “They Only Take the Backroads.”

What Look Mexico does so beautifully on To Bed To Battle, is take emotionally charged rock songs and incorporate incredible instrumentation. The band uses horns, steel pedal guitar, organ, violin and cello, as well as electric piano throughout the entire record. By using this eclectic mix of instruments, it allows each song to have it’s own unique feel, without straying or taking away from the the overall cohesion of the entire album.

Tracks like “They Offered Me a Deal (I Said No, Naturally)” and the albums epic closer “Just Like Old Times” sound huge, and spices up the album just enough. Look Mexico is an outstanding example of a modern rock band, doing their own thing, and doing it the right way. The physical release of To Bed To Battle comes out at the end of March, but you are able to pre-order it now and instantly download the album digitally (320 Kbps), or simply just purchase it digitally. By pre-ordering it on vinyl, you will also receive a button and beer coozie, and the deluxe pre-order includes a shirt, a coozie, as well as a pint glass (awesome right?) Pre-orders can be found here. I would suggest physically purchasing this album just for the incredible album artwork, which elegantly complements it.

“Dub-C, also known as West Chester, Pennsylvania. The town best known for its scrawny white ‘college-loving’ rappers, and its shopping cart crashing professional skateboarders. I’m not really known for anything but I’d like to play music for you on Sunday evenings. Join me as I feature some of West Chester’s finest local independent artists, intermixed with whatever indie/alternative/hip hop I’m listening to at the time, as well as your requests.” – Sam
Listen to The Dub-C Show on Sundays, from 7pm to 10pm.

[ac+r golden show] Alive in Bed-Stuy w/ special guest Christopher Paul Stelling
Spencer took the airwaves by storm last week for this debut show and killed it with great selection of on-the-rise acts from NYC and beyond. He took his show the next level this week, inviting friend and super talented artist Christopher Paul Stelling to join him during his show. Three hours of pure audio bliss ensued. If you missed it, we’ll heat it up for your listening pleasure all this week. Check out Christopher Paul Stelling’s myspace for more music.

Listen to Alive in Bed-Stuy every Wednesday, from noon to 3pm.

Ellie Goulding’s Lights
Ellie Goulding released her first LP this week and Paige wrote a blog about her to acquaint you with this little red-hot pop starlet.

“Almost like the Chinese Zodiac has an annual animal, there’s almost always a electro-pop starlet that stands out as the hallmark of the year. You’ve had “The Year of Little Boots” last year, and maybe “The Year of Lily Allen” the year before that, but I’m calling it now: 2010 is going to be “The Year of Ellie Goulding.”

Digitally buy her album here.

Yeasayer’s Odd Blood
The Johns of Jammin’ with the Johns are quite pleased with Yeasayer’s new album. They discussed the band’s sound’s transformation to a more poppy-dancy appeal. And they can’t get enough of it. Commence dancing now.

Gorillaz’ Plastic Beach
The new Gorillaz’ album has been streaming on a handful of music sites, so we’d remiss not to include it in this week’s sugar-free. Comment your thoughts on tracks! Which one is your favorite?
Pre-order the album here.

[ac+r boost] The Dish
DJ Zealous took a small hiatus from ac+r, but he’s back! And we couldn’t be happier to hear him again, dishing out the hottest hip-hop tracks north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Listen to The Dish Tuesdays from 8pm to 10pm and Saturdays for your pregame, 7pm-9pm.

[ac+r boost] Impromptu What’s Good
Heath is one of our newest Djs, but arguably one of our more fun personalities. See a different side of this teacher-by-day, musically-fueled-man by night. This is pretty much what happens after a hard week of work, an even harder happy hour and then the sudden urge to be on-air.
Listen to What’s Good every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6pm to 8pm.

Bill Haverchuck (Martin Starr) on NBC's short-lived series "Freaks and Geeks."

He was one of the most underrated characters on arguably the most underrated television show of the past decade. Bill Haverchuck (played by Adventureland’s Martin Starr) was one of the characters labeled as a geek on NBC’s fictional drama Freaks and Geeks which originally aired over one decade ago with only twelve episodes (eventually airing the final six episodes of the first and only season). As yet another production in the Judd Apatow arsenal of short-lived television shows, Freaks and Geeks presented a fictional drama surrounding several high school kids in 1980. With several of the main characters moving on to bigger and better things (Seth Rogan, Jason Segel, James Franco, Shia LaBeouf), it was easy to forget the easygoing nerd that was Bill Haverchuck. His wittiness outweighed his stance as a serious character for the majority of the show, but when his true emotions kick in, it’s hard to imagine how some of the other characters were more prominent.

One of the things that surrounds the greatness that is the character Bill Haverchuck is how his entire character can be centered around one main idea; the ability to laugh. In an episode titled, “Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers,” there is an entire sequence where Bill sits on his couch and simply laughs aloud to whatever television program he is watching. He is all alone, and the only sound heard is that of the music overlaying the scene. It is obvious that this is his escape of all the things that might get in the way of his ideal life situation. The ability to put it all to the side and to just sit back and laugh is something to be cherished.

In another episode titled, “Smooching and Mooching,” we find Bill in a situation that is brand new to him. He is at a ‘make out’ party, and he has been locked in a closet with one of the popular girls for ’seven minutes in heaven.’ While most people would automatically write Bill off in this kind of situation, he takes the high road and finds himself in an interesting situation. I’ve transcribed my favorite part to set up what I’d like to explain:

Bill: You know what? You’re a jerk. I was just trying to make small talk. I couldn’t be less happy to be in here with you, so quit acting like I’m hoping I can kiss you. It’s actually the last thing that I wanna do right now.

Girl: You know what Bill, I’m sorry.

Bill: Don’t worry. (pause) You only have 3 minutes and 26 seconds (pause) left in heaven.

–cut scene–

Bill: What’s it like being pretty?

Girl: I don’t know. Like… this is the only way I’ve ever looked.

Bill: I think people treat you nicer when you’re pretty.

Girl: What makes you say that?

Bill: ’Cause you’re never nice to me.

Girl: That is not true, Bill. Every time I look at you you look like you’re having a pretty good time. You’re always laughing or something… so what are you laughing about?

Bill: (pauses) I watch movies in my head.

–laughter–

…well the scene continues on, but to follow this up Bill explains the movie he’s watching in his head (Steve Martin’s The Jerk to be exact), when the girl decides that Bill is worthy of being kissed.

Why is this my favorite scene? Not because of the fact that the nerd gets the girl (though that’s awesome!), but rather that Bill is judged by just about everyone he encounters, and is left to his own devices with the exception of his two best friends. What is really there is a collected individual that knows exactly what he wants, and doesn’t really care what other people think. He knows exactly why he’s hear, and he’s happy to be who he is. The fact that someone takes the time to understand that, and that Bill is willing to stand up for that is what makes this scene one of my favorite demonstrations of his character.

There’s a little bit of Bill Haverchuck in all of us, it just depends on how often you feel like standing up for what you truly believe in.

Here about topics such as these and more every SUNDAY EVENING from 7pm-10pm on THE DUB-C SHOW!

Darwin has always been a special artist in my eyes. He embodies this amazing energy that transcendences all media- whether it be sound waves or LCD computer screens. He’s so much more than a musician; he’s a manifestation of indie pop, in smile, dance and person.

He’s had experience in the past making really great, creative videos, so I was excited to hear via @SpencerKeasey that Darwin had put out one for “Radar Detector.” And I’m happy to say it’s classic Darwin work.

I’ve grown up with Van Morrison. Much like Paul Simon, his music has been in my life since I learned to walk. His songs are like an old pair of shoes, his voice like a living room fire and bottle of wine. No matter how I feel I can always return, I am always welcome in the space his music occupies. I don’t have to be happy to listen to his happy songs, nor sad to listen to the sad ones, or in love or lonesome to listen to any of his lovingly lonesome in and out of love songs. When I listen to Van Morrison I hear a man who has constantly struggled to feel Here Now. He knows where IT’s at, he’s contantly listening in, but somehow finds himself more often then not just outside the door. I am reminded of John Lennon’s lyrics to “Strawberry Fields.” He sings, “Always know, sometimes think it’s me, but you know, I know when it’s a dream. I think a No will be a Yes, but it’s all wrong. That is I think I disagree.” And it may seem strange to equate such different artists, but these lyrics give me the same feeling that I get from most of Van Morrion’s music. There is a sense of the pessemist who is an optimist at heart. The glass isnt half empty, but its only half full. The only way to make things better is to share the glass, no matter how full, with the people around us. There are many songs missing from this playlist, but this is how I felt tonight, these songs happened to be a refuge.

Stranded

These Dreams of You

Warm Love

Bright Side of the Road

Madame George

Saint Dominic’s Preview

Caravan

Old Old Woodstock

Come Here My Love

Starting a New life

You Make Me Feel So Free

Bulbs

Astral Weeks

And It Stoned Me

Moondance

Moonshine Whiskey

Fair Play

Sweet Thing

Into the Mystic

Celtic New Year

Everyone

Tupelo Honey

Cyprus Avenue

Glad Tidings

Hello friendz,

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you that tuned in this afternoon for Alive In Bed-Stuy! Also wanted to take a moment to thank my guest, Christopher Paul Stelling for joining me for the broadcast. He performed 19 (yes, NINETEEN) songs for us here at audiocandy+radio, and brought some really nice mics along, which captured the intricacies of his performance really well. Definitely take a moment to check out Chris’s material: http://www.myspace.com/freedumbmusesick.

Yes, maybe I manage him, and yes, maybe he is one of my best friends, but it’s not going to stop me from saying that he’s truly one of the most prolific songwriters around today…seriously, the dude’s got SKILL. Visit his myspace, and his youtube site for more on him. And keep your eyes & ears out, because we’re about to drop close to 100 songs of his to the masses in a matter of months…a full on media-blitz, if you will.

In the meantime, here’s the full streamable show & tracklisting from today!

Until next week…

Hey yall!

What’s shakin? My name is Spencer Keasey Scanlon, host of Alive In Bed-Stuy, and one of the newer DJs here at audiocandy+radio. Just wanted to take a moment to thank Paige & the team for letting me hijack the airwaves every Wednesday from 12-3pm from now on. Our first broadcast last week was a ton of fun, minus a few technical difficulties.

Sooo…a little more about me, ehh? I’m a total audiophile; I’ve been living in Brooklyn, while working in the music industry now for the better part of 4 years. Currently, I do PR for Pitchfork.tv and the Young Robots record label, cover events for The Village Voice, on top of managing two amazing artists here in Brooklyn…I also organize shows a lot, whether house shows here in my living room, or at any of the great venues that Brooklyn has to offer. Other than that, I’m 26ish, drink too much, sleep too little, love music + adventures + life (and our puppy Foxy Brown).

My radio show will predominantly focus on the vast array of music that Brooklyn has to offer right now. My palette is all over the place, so you’ll never quite know what’s coming up next…I suggest tuning in to find out! I’d love to hear from yall…you can follow me on the twitter @spencerkeasey, and/or email me at spencer@audiocandyradio.com

So here’s the deal:

At West Chester University of Pennsylvania a Women’s Center scheduled event titled, “Pussies, Pens and Politics” was denied funding after debate arose over the use of the word “pussy” in its title. The event, aiming to discuss women’s issues through the use of hip hop, had nothing in it that made emphasis of the word pussy, it was simply a clever word choice to make the title more effective. University representatives claim that they feel that the word choice was offensive and sexist, and did not wish to give university money to the event.

I can only foresee one major problem with this decision. The group that was hosting the event is a group designed to give women a forum to speak with other women about current issues, and empower themselves in a method they find most appropriate. The event was cancelled by a man who was afraid he might offend women if the University sponsored such an event. Does this make his decision sexist? It makes no sense to me that an event set to inspire women to be unique, strong individuals be taken away from a group that sets out to do just that. An offer was made to have an event so long as the title is altered, but how can you encourage women to be strong and unique if they can’t say what they want to say.

The Students for a Democratic Society group on campus held a protest in support of the event, and while their efforts were shortchanged by means of a snowstorm and school cancellation, their message was made known.

Find out more for yourself and check out the “Pussies, Pens and Politics” group on facebook:

so as you may or may not have heard from our show the other day, I’ve been on my grunge mode. Thankfully this is not in reference to hygiene, but more in reference to my uniform. I’m seeing plaids, leathers, loose fits, studs and layers… and if you haven’t shuddered already, then I’m glad we’re on the same page but for those of you who may be a little more skeptical, fear not: I’ve got some sweet visuals to assuage your fiery skepticism… but proceed with caution nevertheless >:)

^ both of these are Erin Wasson via studded hearts… I feel like she oozes cool and confident, all while convincing you that she truly “threw on” her outfit that morning (or mid afternoon)

In the same vein as this grungy, eff-what-you-think concept, I’ve also decided that I’d like to pursue “the gypsie”. While the lifestyle of a gypsie maybe unrealistic (let alone dangerous in today’s free world), I do believe the free-spirited, fairy-like breath that I associate with a gypsie to be right up my alley. Should be interesting with the leather/plaid/studs but we’ll see how it all works out..

^ This is from Vogue Australia March 2010, and I love this whole pastel-tips fad that has taken over. As much of a fad as I’m sure it’ll be, don’t be too surprised if you see me sporting some unnaturally bright colors. Maybe not pink.. but probably something more along these lines..

(via studded hearts)
..or exactly along those lines. sans malboros, but nobody’s judgin.
GRUNGE!

I could try to explain this short film to you one hundred times over, and you still wouldn’t grasp the concept. To be honest you must ignore all preconceived notions that there are any defining plot elements that make sense. This film was entirely improved; down to the movements made and the words exchanged, and serves of historical accuracy to any time period in particular. I simply found this kid to be hilarious one day when he was in my backyard perched like a gargoyle on a bench reciting lines similar to what is heard in the movie. Maybe it’s a “had to be there” kind of situation, maybe it’s a diamond in the rough of a comedy (yes we were going for comedy). We filmed this over several days in June of 2009, and hope to create some sort of sequel this summer.

The cast of “Dorphis Metamorphis” will more than likely be featured on this coming sunday’s episode of “The Dub-C Show” live from Camp Hill, PA as I will be home from West Chester for spring break.
