Michael O’Brien is an entertainment whore specializing in Neil Young. He writes, produces, and acts in short-films in addition to producing hip-hop interpretations of classic rock artists. He received a B.S. in Marketing from the University of Maryland in 2008 and since 2009 has managed the College Park bluesy funk-rock quintet, The New Retro. Michael has worked in various movie / music related businesses since the age of 15, such as Tower Records, CD Game Exchange, Hoff Theatre, Olney 9 Cinemas, and 9:30 Club, but currently has an office job where he is able to travel the world and spread the word of Neil Young and the New Retro!
Hello folks,
It’s been quite a few moons since you’ve heard my voice, but I am back with some tunes. On the show I’ll explain (excuse) my absence from audiocandy from the past couple months as well as showcase Neil’s career picking up where I ended last: the eighties. This will be a two-parter with tonight’s show focusing on 1980-1985.
This is his experimental era… A phase so controversial at the time he’s sued by his label for producing non-Neil Young sounding songs. It definitely has it’s lows… but when it’s good it’s a head turner! He’s the tracklisting:
1. Captain Kennedy
2. Opera Star
3. Surfer Joe & Moe the Sleaze
4. Shots
5. Little Thing Called Love
6. Transformer Man
7. Sample & Hold
8. Like An Inca
9. Wonderin’
10. Kinda Fonda Wanda
11. Betty Lou’s Got A New Pair of Shoes
12. Rainin’ In My Heart
13. Get Back To The Country
14. Misfits
15. Are There Any Real Cowboys?
Enjoy!
Hello Folks!
Mike O’Brien here, reporting to you live from Dublin, Ireland where I am on business for a brief stay. The country is as beautiful as Neil on acoustic guitar and the people here are as fucked up as his guitar solos (they talk just as long, as well). When I come back, April 26th I’ll carry on where I stopped off: the eighties. Things get crazy this decade- Neil tries so many different genres that he’s sued by his record company for releasing non-Neil Young type material. I’ll take you through all the motions: country, techno, big band, and rockabilly.
Speaking of Neil and different genres… To celebrate my birthday (April 20th), I’m hosting a “Beats Never Rust” Jam Session with friends. Now if you don’t know what Beats Never Rust is go here now: www.myspace.com/beatsneverrust
If you do know BNR, your job just dropped ’cause you realized we’re doing live instrumentation of Neil Young hip-hop beats with a 10 piece band. Oh my…
Life is grand… I hope you’re as blessed as I’ve been.
Love & Only Love,
Mike O’Brien
