Our friends Indie Bands with a Mission have been selling their one-of-a-kind crafts to help out D.C. area food banks, but they’re breaking new ground Sunday with their first-ever benefit concert at Jammin Java.

They’ll have performances by Rosy Likes Red, Find Vienna (formerly “Clarity”) and Corrin Campbell.

The show will be early, with doors at 1:00pm and music starting at 1:30pm. All ages are welcome.

When Brooklyn outfit Detachment Kit split, two of its members, Charlie Davis and Ian Menard, weren’t quite ready to hang up their guitars. They grabbed good friend Jess Birch and formed Bronze, a still-Brooklyn-based baby band with a grown-up sound.

Charlie and Ian left behind the grungy, lo-fi slowcore of Detachment Kit for deeper, multi-layered grooves with Bronze. Their self-titled debut EP, just five songs long, offers a wide spectrum of sound that shows a ton of promise.

We’ve got Beach House-esque dream pop with “Deep Freeze” and light, breezy summer fare with “Sunny Day,” which sounds like a tossed-away b-side from Delorean’s Subiza. “Count to Two” gives us something heavier and shows why the band were openers for buzzed-about (and James Murphy produced) Free Energy earlier this year. “Sara Lisa” closes it all out with a taut package of all of the above.

But the real charmer here is the opener, “Horses.” It kicks in with the space-to-Earth broadcast from NASA’s Apollo 8 mission, when man first left Earth’s orbit. The fuzzy voice is slowly overcome by dueling guitar riffs and finally fades out into a blissful explosion of sunny pop. “Take a ride with me tonight/Are we ever gonna feel alright?” the lyrics ask. Yes, we are.

Did anyone tune into the Dead Weather’s live album stream tonight? They played their up coming record Sea of Cowards from front to back, live. It was broadcast from Jack White’s Third Man Studios in Nashville, Tennessee where the album was also recorded. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but only upon the second listen, I feel that this record is a lot stronger and more focused than their debut Horehound (this is saying a lot because I absolutely LOVE Horehound). The album translates so well live, and it really captures the band’s over-the-top live show. It’s faster, louder, and does not stop from start to finish. If you have yet to check out the Dead Weather, what a perfect time to start right before their sophomore release drops next week. I can’t stress this enough, but this band absolutely kills it. Sea of Cowards comes out May 11th via Third Man Records. Summer touring plans for the band were also released today (Definitely expect an album review next week).

Sleigh Bells’ highly-anticipated debut, “Treats,” is quickly approaching its May 11 release. In anticipation, the Brooklyn duo have released the lead track from the album, “Tell ‘Em.”

It’s Sleigh Bells as we have come to know and love them — fuzzed out grunge, dance pop. This track has the potential to blow out your speakers. (Just like the band blew out the speakers at The Mill at Trinity College in Hartford earlier this month.

Baltimore hardcore crew Octaves are hitting their stride, releasing their first full-length Greener Pastures, signing with Hotfoot Records and embarking on a spring tour. Audiocandy+radio is luck enough to be exclusively streaming the new album on sugar-free and on-demand. So give it a listen, and compare your evaluation to ac+r resident blogger Brett.

Souther rappers have always had a sense of pride and an individual style associated with their musical style.  the original southern crew was of course the dungeon family crew which has put out some of your favorite artists from the ATL mainly Outkast and Cee-Lo Green aka the voice of gnarls barkley.  In recent years this crew mentality has left hip hop leading to the emergence of the star rapper due mainly to the homogenization of hip hop and rappers going to producers from different backgrounds for their music.  The closest thing to a southern crew in the last few years is probably the Cash Money crew but that is only because Mr Carter is featured on every song.  It gives me great pleasure to share with you a new group of southern rappers that have recaptured this spirit of hip hop and they are the PAPER ROUTE GANGSTAZ.  In their mixtape Fear and Loathing in Hunts Vegas which was released in 2008 with indie dance party djs extraordinaires Diplo and Benzi they bring  a distinctly alabama sound to a mainstream hip hop landscape that was becoming remarkably trite and infuse southern funk to their music.  check out their singles “alabama” “bama gettin money” “woodgrain” and their new soon to be stoner classic “keyshia cole”.  These guys are going to bring the noize in 2010 and ya’ll should get ready for a great ride!

Does anybody find new music on the television anymore?  It seems like today everybody uses websites like pandora or music sites like pitchfork, hell even youtube, to “discover” new music, but remember way back when music was on the tellie? Channels like THE BOX  existed and a little known channel called MTV actually played music… oh late 90′s, what a strange time you were.  I am here to tell you that there is still plenty of good music to be found on the tv, but it is in the place you would least expect it, and though it seems like it should be wrong it is sooo right!  I present to you, the TV commercial! the new venue for the emerging artists of the world!  This is a great place to showcase new artists, who may not get airplay on popular radio, give money and support to these artists, and to now expense to the listener (unless you are actually going to buy the shit that the song is in the commercial for).  I have been noticing over my many years, but most recently when i encountered the Phoenix single 1901 in a Cadillac commercial.  Phoenix is a band that i really hadn’t listened or payed attention to, as it hasn’t really been my flavor for many years, but after hearing them in the commercial i checked them out, and enjoyed the hell out of their music.  This isn’t the first time this has happened to my (maybe i’m just weird) it also happened with a Samsung commercial with the song Daydreamin’ by Lupe Fiasco feat Jill Scott (PHILLY!) and a sample from I Monster, which has since i saw it around 2 years ago become one of my favorite groups.  It also happened with the song California Soul by Marlena Shaw in a docker’s commercial.  I believe that the start of this phenomenon-enon started with the ipod commercials such as fiest’s – 1234.  Needless to say this is great for the artists exposure, and actually puts good music on the television again!

i know i didn’t write about what i said at the end of my last rant, but hell if you leave no feedback you better not know what to expect.

College basketball is often the only thing that gets Americans through the harshest part of the winter. Days and nights spent cheering on almamaters and sizing up the competition all to end in the glorious sports competition that is the NCAA playoffs, aka March Madness.

Music fans get the short end of the stick if they aren’t into sports, wallowing dark days away to Bon Iver’s Blood Bank EP or something equally as morose.

But consider this a new day for music fans, and hopefully the start of an awesome audiocandy+radio tradition.

ac+r will be running a contest known as “summer fest fever,” similar to the strategtic team placement of NCAA brackets but with a musical twist (and without some crazy form). Pick 15 bands that you think will be performing at Bonnaroo 2010, and whomever has the most correct band selections wins an ac+r prize pack!

• E-mail Paige@audiocandyradio.com with your 15 band selections of who you think will be performing at Bonnaroo 2010. Make the e-mail subject line read, “summer fest fever.” Be sure to include your name, e-mail, phone number and location.
